How to Lay Brick Fences

Brick fences serve a variety of purposes such as keeping animals inside or out of designated spaces. They also add visual appeal to the outside of a house or building, and are more sturdy and durable than wood or wire fences. You can lay brick fences yourself, saving money by not paying a contractor to do the work. Purchase the materials from home improvement stores or specialty brick and stone purveyors.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark off the areas where you want to build the brick fence using spray paint or ground stakes.

    • 2

Excavate the area marked off for the fence using a shovel or rented excavating machine. Excavate slightly wider than the width you want the fence to be. For example, if you plan to build a fence 1 foot wide, excavate about 15 inches width along the fence path.

    • 3

Fill the excavated fence trench with 1 or 2 inches of crushed gravel. You can use sand as well, but crushed gravel is better because it compacts well and bonds better with the brick.

    • 4

Pave the fence. Start by mixing the mortar or cement following the package instructions. Next, lay a smooth and even coat of mortar or cement on the bottom, and lay bricks over it. You can lay the bricks in any pattern you like. In between each brick, add a thin layer of mortar or cement, so the next brick bonds with the previous one. Make sure the mortar or cement is smooth and even using the small shovel or brick laying tool. Continue to lay the bottom layer of brick across the entire fence boundary.

    • 5

Lay a thin layer of cement or mortar on top of the bottom layer of bricks, and lay the next layer of bricks on top, making sure each brick has mortar or cement in between. Continue adding more layers until your fence is the desired height.
