How to Install Exterior Stairway Railings

Exterior stairways, such as those leading to a porch or deck, can become a safety hazard during inclement weather. Adding hand rails to such a stairway increases safety and reduces chances of slips and falls, especially for children and the elderly. However, mounting the railing to an exterior brick wall requires specialized anchors that expand when installed and anchor the wood or metal railing properly. Although the installation process takes a little planning, with the right tools and material, mounting the railing to an exterior brick wall is a straightforward procedure.

  • Marker
  • Drill and masonry bit
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Face mask

Instructions

    • 1

Check the local building code requirements for the minimum and maximum height at which to install exterior railings. Most codes require railings at 3 feet above the stair treads.

    • 2

Place a measuring tape flush against the wall at the uppermost tread and mark the railing height. Move down to the middle step and mark the same height on the wall. Repeat the process at the lowermost stair tread.

    • 3

Extend a chalk line above the three marks on the wall along the stairway. Pull the line taut and release it so it snaps a sloping line on the wall. The line determines the location of the rail on the wall.

    • 4

Enlist helpers to hold the rail against the chalk line on the wall. Insert the tip of a marker into a screw hole along its lower side to form a mark on the wall. Repeat the process to transfer the locations for screws on the wall. Lower the rail and set it aside.

    • 5

Cut off a strip of masking tape and wind it around the drill bit at the point that matches the length of the lag shield anchors. This tape serves as a depth limit that keeps you from drilling any further into the brick wall than is required.

    • 6

Wear a face mask and ear and eye protection. Position the tip of the masonry drill bit over a mark for the screw on the wall. Drill through the hole until the required depth. Continue this process to drill clean holes through the marks.

    • 7

Slide an anchor into a hole and tap it gently to drive it all the way through with a hammer.

    • 8

Hold the railing up against the wall and align it so its screw holes match the wall anchors. Use a screwdriver to insert screws into the anchors along the railing. Tighten each screw head until it falls in line with the surrounding wall surface.
