DIY Installation of a Galvanized Steel Roof

Galvanized steel roof panels are one of the easiest types of roofing materials to install. They are sold in prefabricated sheets that are ridged, with the panels overlapping each other by a couple of inches across the entirety of the roof. All you need is some basic carpentry skills, tools and some spare time on your hands to install galvanized steel roofing. Doing it yourself saves you the money in comparison to hiring a roofer, and as long as you follow the proper installation methods you will have a roof that lasts a lifetime.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the entire roof surface with a layer of felt paper. Cut the paper off the roll with a utility knife and staple it down with the hammer tacker. Start with the lowest sections and overlap them with the upper layers by at least 3 inches. After you are finished, wrap the L-shaped metal flashing around the edges of the roof and screw it in place on top of the paper.

    • 2

Line the L-flashing along the lowest edge of the roof with the adhesive that came with your flashing from the manufacturer. Install your first row of galvanized roof panels on top of this adhesive, with the length of the panels extending up the roof. Overlap each piece vertically according to the manufacturer’s directions (usually 2 to 3 inches). Mount the screws every few inches according to the manufacturer’s recommendations (usually 3 to 4 inches apart vertically, and 12 inches apart horizontally).

    • 3

Overlap the upper row over the bottom row by at least 3 inches and install them the same way you installed the first row of panels, minus the adhesive. Work your way up until you reach the top of the roof, then repeat the process for the opposite side of the roof.

Install the peak flashing along the top edge of the roof, using the supplied adhesive from the manufacturer. Screw it down after you mount it. Also install the peak flashing along the exterior edges of the roof to cap everything off.
