How to Handle Fiberglass Batt Insulation

Fiberglass batt insulation is commonly used to insulate interior walls. Proper insulation can dramatically lower your utility bills, and is straightforward to work with and install. Fiberglass batts do pose a serious health hazard if not properly handled, as the minute fiberglass fibers can irritate eyes, skin and lungs. As with all home projects, safety is of paramount importance when installing this type of insulation.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear goggles, a face mask or respirator, a shirt with long sleeves, heavy pants and work gloves at all times when working with insulation.

    • 2

Measure the width and height of the area you intend to insulate with a tape measure, then add 1/2 inch to each measurement.

    • 3

Lay the batt insulation on a flat surface and transfer the measurements to the paper backing, including the extra 1/2 inch.

    • 4

Slice through the paper backing of the fiberglass at the measured points with a utility blade. Use a straightedge as a guide.

    • 5

Push the insulation into the area between the wall studs until the back of the insulation rests firmly against the wall.

    • 6

Tuck the edges of the insulation into the wall cavity with a putty knife.

    • 7

Shower as soon as you complete the insulation job and wash the clothes you were wearing immediately.
