How to Figure Out How Much Insulation I Need to Wrap Heat Ducts

One way to make your home more energy-efficient is to wrap your heating ducts with insulation. This prevents the heat from escaping from the ducts as it leaves the furnace and travels through the ducts to the registers in the different rooms of your home. Determining the amount of insulation you need to complete this project is a fairly easy task.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the ducts. If the ducts are different sizes, measure the length of the ducts at each size separately.

    • 2

Measure the circumference of the ducts.

    • 3

Add up the total lengths and total circumferences of the ducts. Multiply the total lengths by the total circumferences to determine how much insulation you need. If the ducts to be insulated are different sizes, multiply the circumferences and lengths of the ducts of each size, then add the multiplication results for the different sizes together.
