How to Insulate a Non-Ventilated Attic

Attic ventilation prevents heat from building up inside the attic, which can also heat the rest of your home, especially the upstairs. If your attic doesn't have any type of ventilation, insulating it can help keep your home cool. Using spray-foam insulation against the wooden sheathing between the roof rafters provides an effective barrier to block exterior heat from entering the attic.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the hoses to the tanks that contain the chemicals for the spray foam. When the chemicals are combined, they will turn into the foam.

    • 2

Point the nozzle toward one corner of the roof where you want to begin spraying the foam.

    • 3

Pull the trigger on the sprayer and move back and forth in a straight line, covering an area that measures about 3 to 4 feet wide.

    • 4

Continue applying the foam to the roof until it is completed, covering it in 3 to 4 foot sections.

    • 5

Examine the foam after it has hardened, which only takes a few minutes. If there are any areas where the foam doesn't extend to at least the edge of the roof rafter, add more foam to provide a uniform coating.
