Proper Installation Instructions for a Fi-Foil Radiant Barrier in the Attic

Fi-Foil radiant barrier is designed to reduce the convection of heat in an attic. By interrupting convected temperature transfer, this material keeps the attic cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, reducing both air-conditioning and heating costs. Installing a radiant foil barrier takes a bit of time to do properly, so be sure you have the time and patience to undertake the job before starting it. You'll be rewarded with a more comfortable and more efficient home.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear any obstructions out of the attic. This will make the job go much more smoothly and quickly.

    • 2

Measure the length of the attic along one of the eave lines. Cut a piece of radiant barrier to this length, using a utility knife.

    • 3

Unroll the piece that you cut along the base of the rafters on one side of the attic. Staple it to the underside of the rafters, being careful not to interfere with any ventilation spaces that exist between the attic insulation and the rafters.

    • 4

Staple another piece of radiant barrier to the underside of the rafters so that its bottom edge overlaps the top edge of the first piece. Continue adding pieces of radiant barrier until you reach the ridge.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 2 through 4 for the other side of the attic.
