How to Blow-In Insulation for Leaking Vinyl Siding

To help reduce your exposure to rising energy costs make sure that your home is properly insulated. For homes with vinyl siding, air leaking through the exterior walls is a potential problem. You can minimize or eliminate this issue by filling the cavity between the drywall and the sheathing underneath the siding with blow-in insulation. This is a type of insulation made of cellulose-based material such as shredded newspaper, which is treated with a fire-retardant chemical. The insulation is then blown into the walls with a blower machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove a piece of vinyl siding near the top of the wall with a vinyl siding removal tool. Slide the hook on the tool underneath the lip of the piece of siding above the piece you are removing, and pull down on it. Do this for the length of the wall until the entire lip has been separated.

    • 2

Pull the nails out of the slots in the top of the siding panel, and remove the siding from the wall. When removing the siding, take care not to damage it. If you have to replace the panel, the new panel will stand out; and if the siding is old enough, you may not be able to get a replacement panel in the same color.

    • 3

Locate the studs in the wall with a stud finder, and mark the locations.

    • 4

Drill holes into the wooden sheathing with a 2-inch hole saw, placing the holes in between the studs.

    • 5

Fill the blower machine with the insulation, following the manufacturer's instructions. You can rent the machine from an equipment-rental business. Wear safety goggles, gloves and a mask when blowing the insulation.

    • 6

Slide the blower hose into the hole and down toward the bottom of the wall.

    • 7

Turn the blower machine on, and slowly pull the hose out of the wall. Turn the machine off when you feel resistance, and the insulation is no longer blowing into the wall.

    • 8

Place the circular piece of sheathing you removed back into the hole, and run a thick bead of silicone caulk around the joint. Fill the rest of the wall with insulation, repeating this process.

    • 9

Replace the siding panel by hooking the lip on the bottom edge of the panel onto the top of the panel beneath it. Nail the panel back to the sheathing through the slits along the top edge. Pull the bottom of the panel above the one you replaced downward with the vinyl siding removal tool, and hook it onto the top of the panel.
