Check your attic for gaps in the ceiling that can allow air to bypass your insulation. Check the places in your attic where plumbing fixtures, air ducts, electrical conduits and lighting fixtures enter the attic and seal any gaps around them using latex caulking or spray foam adhesive. Use a section of rigid foam insulation held in place using caulk or foam to provide a filler for gaps larger than 2 inches.
Place the insulating batts between the joists in your attic so that each batt completely fills the space between the joists without stretching or compressing the insulation. Repeat this process with each batt until all of the spaces between your joists are completely filled.
Cut gaps in the insulation around recessed light fixtures so that there is a space of 2 to 3 inches surrounding the fixture. Cut lightweight wire fencing and bend it into a cylinder that will fit around the fixture to hold the insulation in place.
Measure the space between your joists and the depth of your insulation. Measure and cut soffit dams using wood or cardboard so that each dam fills the space between your joists and spans 1 to 2 inches above your insulation.
Install each soffit dam between the joists above your outside walls. Apply latex caulk around the sides of each soffit dam to create a weather seal. Alternatively, wedge each soffit dam in place using nails driven into the joists in front of and behind each dam. Attach a soffit baffle on the underside of your roof deck above each soffit vent using staples.
