How to Attach an Inch of Styrofoam to a Block Wall

Installing insulation can help make your home more energy-efficient. Several types of insulation are available, each used in different situations. When insulating a concrete block wall, like you would when finishing your basement, Styrofoam board insulation might be your best option. Styrofoam insulation is made of materials like polystyrene or polyurethane, and is molded into sheets. This type of insulation is easy to handle, and doesn't expose you to dangers like breathing the fibers in, as you'd have when dealing with fiberglass or loose-fill insulation.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the walls with a power washer and allow the walls to dry.

    • 2

Spread the Styrofoam adhesive on the back of the first sheet.

    • 3

Push the sheet firmly against the wall in the bottom corner, positioning it vertically.

    • 4

Install the bottom row of sheets along the rest of the walls, using the same process. Measure and cut the sheets with a utility knife as needed.

    • 5

Measure and cut sheets to fit the space between the top edge of the first row of sheets and the ceiling joists.

    • 6

Apply the Styrofoam adhesive to the back of the first sheet, and place it on the block wall above the first Styrofoam sheets. Stagger the sheets in the second row so the seams don't line up with the sheets in the first row. Install the sheets until the walls are complete.

    • 7

Cover the seams between the sheets with installation tape.
