How to Get a Solar System at Your House

Many homeowners have at least considered the possibility of installing a solar system to reduce electricity costs and to do their part for a "greener" planet. Most, however, have come to the conclusion that a solar system is beyond their budget. This is situation has changed dramatically since the introduction of solar leasing. Now it is easy to get a solar system at your home for zero upfront investment in many areas. For those areas where no leasing plan is available, your state may still offer rebates and incentives to help offset the cost of the system.

Instructions

    • 1

Research the different state and federal incentives available to you as a homeowner. Use the Database of State Incentives for Renewables and Efficiency (DSIRE) website or the Solar Home interactive map of solar energy incentives by state website (see Resources). This information will help determine what type of budget you can afford to spend on a solar system.

    • 2

Visit the main websites of companies that offer solar leasing and solar installation (see Resources). Some of the most well-known national companies include SolarCity, SunGevity and Citizenre. Use the built-in search system to enter your zip code and find out whether your area offers a leasing program.

    • 3

Use the Find Solar "Solar Install Map" or a local phone directory to find local solar installation companies in your area (see Resources). Visit the websites of the closest companies to get information on system prices and installation costs.

    • 4

Contact the company or companies that offer leasing plans or solar installations in your area. Request an appointment for an appraiser to visit your home. The appraiser will provide a more accurate description of the system your home requires to meet your energy needs. The type and cost of the system varies depending on the amount of sunlight your area receives on average and the type of state or federal incentives available.

    • 5

Request additional appraisals from other companies that serve your area if possible. Appraisals are generally free, and the efficiency ratings may vary depending on the system used. Installation costs also tend to vary from company to company.

    • 6

Compare the costs and predicted benefits of each of the companies that offered you an appraisal. Choose the company that offers the best terms and highest energy savings.

    • 7

Contact the company and ask for additional information on how to claim any incentives offered in your state. Most companies will be able to provide you with detailed information. Request an appointment to sign a contract and begin installation.
