Energy Tips for Heating

Cold winters are a drain on our wallets. Heat can escape through windows, doors, pipes, crawl spaces or attics. Making sure your home is properly insulated can do a lot to keep the heat inside. No matter what your budget, it's worth analyzing how to make your home more energy efficient while lowering your monthly heating bills.
  1. Furnace & Water Heater

    • Turn down the thermostat to conserve energy.

Install a programmable thermostat so you can lower the heat while you are out of the house or sleeping. Have a professional check out your furnace to make sure it's working efficiently. Clean or replace filters on a regular basis.

Turn the temperature on your water heater down to 120 F and insulate all pipes. Replacing the furnace and water heater with energy efficient models will also improve the cost of heating your home. Check for rebates offered by your state.

    Windows & Doors

    • Check all windows are sealed. Re-caulk or replace ones where you feel a draft coming through. Replacing older windows will keep the cold out and heat in. If you can't afford to replace all the windows in your home, start with one room and replace them gradually. If you can't replace them, hardware stores have plastic shrink wrap that will seal the windows for the winter.

Light switches and outlets are another place where heat can escape. Hardware stores sell insulated liners that install quickly to help seal these leaks. Check doors for drafts and replace weather stripping as needed. Weather stripping kits are at most hardware stores. Install door sweeps to keep the heat from leaking out under the door.

    Furniture & Drapes

    • Check to make sure your heating vents are clear. Move furniture away from the vents. This will improve air circulation. Make sure the drapes do not hang over the heating vent or allow anything to block the flow of heat into the room.

    Quick Energy Saves

    • Wash clothing in warm or cold water. Hot water uses more energy. When using the clothes dryer, dry clothing for as little time as possible. Over-drying clothing wastes energy. Keep the lint trap clean. When cooking keep the oven closed. Opening the oven causes it lose 50 degrees Fahrenheit each time.

Make sure the damper on the fireplace is closed when not in use. Check the attic insulation. It should be the same height as the floor joists. If needed, add more insulation.
