Do it Yourself Solar Panel Installation

One way to improve a home's value while saving money on energy costs is to install solar panels. Many different types of solar panel kits account for a wide range of skill sets. Some large solar panel kits require some degree of special training to install, while others come with easy-to-follow instructions that many handy men and women can use. The level of expertise necessary varies between choices.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick out a solar panel kit that does not require special expertise. Photovoltaic cells (PVs) are preferred for a do-it-yourself job, as these cells are not only efficient, but require far less expertise than a water-based solar setup. Look for solar kits made with the most modern technology possible, as PV cells prior to 2008 can still require expertise to properly set up.

    • 2

Decide whether you will mount the solar panels on the roof or employ independently mounted racking. Roof mounts require more construction skills, and the ability to properly locate beams to ensure proper setup. Independently mounted panels come in kits with the metal bars and scaffolding needed for proper setup.

    • 3

Install the support frame first once you pick out a site. On the roof, this requires locating beams and securing the mounts with stainless steel lag bolts right into the rafters. This is best done when the roof is being worked on, so the solar panels can be "flashed in" with the roofing, making it leak proof. On the ground, this means picking a sunny and open spot to set up the ground mounts.

    • 4

Follow the instructions to the letter and make sure all sizes match up. For example, many metal rails for solar panels use 3/8-inch bolts, but this will not be the case with every kit. Don't mix and match.

    • 5

Add the solar panels on top after the mounting is set up, handling gently to avoid any type of damage. If you set up the mounts properly, this step should be fairly easy as you only need to screw and bolt them into supports as needed.

Follow the kit's instructions step by step for mounting the inverter. The exact specifics of this step will always be including in instructions and vary from one setup to the next.

    • 7

Run the wires through the conduit to connect the solar panels to the inverter. Running the wires through the conduit helps protect them and your investment.
