How to Mount a Plate Heat Exchanger

In a plate heat exchanger, two substances flow through channels on each side of a plate and transfer heat from the hot substance to the cold substance. This type of heat exchanger is often used when space is limited and efficiency of the heat exchange is not very important, such as on-demand water heaters and high-powered computers. Mounting a plate heat can be really easy if screw holes are already provided or quite challenging if no holes are provided.

Things You'll Need

  • Plate heat exchanger
  • Pencil
  • Two Z mounting brackets
  • Screws/ lag bolts
  • Screw driver
  • Spanner straps

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the heat exchanger up against where you want to mount it, and then use the pencil to outline the heat exchanger. If the heat exchanger is going to be mounted on a vertical surface, set it on the floor while you install the initial mounting brackets.

    • 2

Mount two Z brackets on the bottom edge of the heat exchanger outline. The brackets must be screwed or bolted to a solid support, like a wall stud, and need to be placed about 25 percent from the right and left edges of the outline. Use the screws and screwdriver or bolts to mount the brackets.

    • 3

Mount the end of the spanner straps on the left side of the outline using the screws and screwdriver or the bolts. The straps should be evenly spaced along the height of the heat exchanger.

    • 4

Set the heat exchanger back in place. The bottom of the heat exchanger should set in the groove formed by the Z brackets and be primarily supported by these brackets.

    • 5

Mount the right end of the top spanner strap. Pull the strap across the top of the heat exchanger, then screw the free end into the wall. This will prevent the heat exchanger from falling forward. Repeat the process for the bottom strap.

Attach the tubing to the heat exchanger. It is now ready to use.
