How to Insulate Around Wires & Outlet Boxes With Fiberglass

Installing insulation is one task where the devil is truly in the details. The insulating properties of the product are significantly reduced if it is compressed, not butted snugly together or not perfectly continuous. When insulating around electrical wires and outlet boxes, it is important to take your time to assure a tight fit. Insulation that is properly installed creates a house with an even temperature and is comfortable for its owners. Adding additional insulation during the building process is smart because it is inexpensive.

Instructions

  1. Electrical Wires

    • 1

Measure from the bottom of the wall to the electrical wire with the measuring tape.

    • 2

Lay the insulation batt --- precut panels --- on the ground and measure the distance on one end of the batt to the height of the wire.

    • 3

Lay the straight edge on the batt, across the line where the wire will reside.

    • 4

Push down on the straight edge compressing the insulation.

    • 5

Cut half way through the batt with the utility knife. This will take some practice to only cut half way through.

    • 6

Install the bottom of the batt at the bottom of the wall by pushing it in between the framing members. Open the cut line up by pulling slightly back on the top of the batt and insert the wire into the cut line. Continue installing the batt in between the wall studs.

    Outlet Boxes

    • 7

Measure the distance from the bottom of the wall to the outlet box and make note of which side it is installed on.

    • 8

Lay the batt on the floor and measure up from the bottom to where the outlet box will be and draw a line with a black marker.

    • 9

Lay a spare outlet box on this line; outline the box with a marker on the insulation. Hold the outlet box on the side of the insulation and mark the depth of the box on the insulation.

    • 10

Cut along the lines with a utility knife creating the electrical box's shape in the insulation.

    • 11

Install the insulation into the wall by aligning the bottom and sliding the cut out behind the box. Push the insulation in between the wall studs.
