Put on your gloves and safety glasses to protect your body from the fiberglass. It is also recommended that you wear long pants and a long sleeve shirt while installing the insulation. Fiberglass is an irritant and its best kept away from your skin.
Carry the insulation roll to the far corner of your attic. Be careful to only step on the top of the joists to avoid falling through the ceiling. If the joists are covered in insulation you can lay boards perpendicular to the joists to provide a stable working environment.
Position the start of the roll in the corner of the attic and begin rolling it out. Make sure the edge along the roof line runs parallel and snug.
Position the next roll beside the first roll and begin rolling it out. Maintain a tight fit between the two blankets by butting the two together. Tight seams between the individual sections are important to maintain its insulative properties.
Cut the insulation blanket with a utility knife to fit around vent stacks, bathroom ventilation ducts or to adjust its length for a short section. To cut a straight line in the insulation, lay a piece of wood along the line and run the utility knife along the leading edge of the wood.
