How to Convert Refrigeration Tons to Kilowatts

Refrigerator tons are an older form of energy measurement that is still used on some commercial refrigerators in the United States. Other countries use kilowatts and you may have to convert the amount of tons when conducting business with someone in another country. Each refrigeration ton is equal to 3.517 kW.

  Multiply the number of refrigeration tons by 3.517 to get the number of kilowatts. If you want to use only two decimal places, round up to 3.52. If you have 4 tons that you want to convert, 4 x 3.517 = 14.068 kW.

  Convert the value to watts if needed by multiplying the kilowatt value by 1,000. If you have 14.068 kW, multiply by 1,000 to get 14,068 watts.
- 3
  Divide by 3.517, or multiply by 0.2843, to go from kilowatts back to refrigeration tons. 75 kW would equal 21.32 refrigeration tons.
