How to Switch to Green Power

The rising cost of energy prices and concerns about global warming has prompted many homeowners to consider green power to replace or supplement energy they receive from traditional sources. The United States Federal Government offers a series of tax breaks to residents who add green technologies to their homes.

Instructions

    • 1

Switch to solar power. Add solar panels to roofs facing south to generate electricity that is used either directly by the owners or sold back to the electric company. Electric companies offer credits and incentives to homeowners to help defray the cost off installing the panels. Tax deductions for installing solar panels also are available to the homeowner.

    • 2

Install wind turbines to generate electricity. Mount the turbines on a tower at least 30 feet tall. Obtain permission from a homeowners' association or local government prior to installing a wind turbine.

    • 3

Replace traditional gas or electric heaters with solar-water heating. The installation of solar hot water arrays on a roof provides hot water for cooking and bathing while reducing the amount of energy required from natural gas or electric sources.
