How to Add Soffit Vents

Soffit vents help to increase the air flow into your home's attic. Increased air flow will help to eliminate heat buildup in the attic, which can save you money on your cooling bills. Wooden soffits can be easily cut to install soffit vents. If your soffits are made of another material, it is best to consult the help of a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Go into the attic with a flashlight. Move any material that will obstruct air flow from the eave above where the vents will be located. Wear gloves, goggles and long sleeves while moving insulation.

    • 2

Outline the vent cutout area on the soffit panel that is located outside the house. Center the cutout area so the sides are equally located between the fascia and the house. Outline the cutout area so it will be 1/4-inch smaller then the vent on all sides.

    • 3

Cut along the outline with a jigsaw to create the cutout for the vent.

    • 4

Go outside to where the cutout is. Add a bead of caulk to the vent's flange. Insert the vent into the cutout. Attach the corners of the vent to the soffit with screws.
