How to Install Insulation Around Duct Work

There are several different methods used to heat homes, one of which is a forced-air heating system. This is a system which heats air in a furnace, usually located in the basement, then sends it throughout your home through metal ducts with the aid of a fan. One drawback to this system is that heat can be lost as the warm air travels through the ducts. You can reduce this heat loss and lower your energy costs by insulating the ducts.

• Foil faced insulation
• Utility knife
• Safety goggles
• Gloves

     Inspect the duct work for any cracks or gaps in the ducts and in the joints between different sections. Wrap duct tape over any gaps to seal them.

     Measure the circumference of the duct and cut a length of foil faced insulation to fit around the duct.

     Secure the insulation to the duct with duct tape.

   • 4

     Continue installing the insulation until the ducts have been covered.

   • 5

     Seal the seams between different pieces of insulation with duct tape.
