DIY Guide to Make Your Own Electricity

Energy can neither be created or destroyed; only transferred. Making your own electricity is done by harnessing a renewable energy source such as wind, solar or water power. Wind and solar power are accessible to most of the population and are also the most cost effective. A combination of wind and solar power ensures that, under most weather conditions, a home will receive power. The scale and scope of the setup will determine how much it will cost.

Things You'll Need

  • Wind turbines and solar panels
  • Transformer or inverter
  • Battery

Instructions

    • 1

Select a location for the wind turbine and solar panels. Wind turbines should be placed in locations that have unobstructed wind flow, such as on a hill. Solar panels should be placed in a location that receives direct sunlight all day.

    • 2

Connect the wind turbine and solar generators to the transformer or inverter. This unit acts like a hub, collecting the energy received from the sources and storing it in the battery or outputting it through the inverter.

    • 3

Run a power cable from the transformer to the power inverter. The inverter is necessary because the current collected from the sources is DC and it needs to be converted to AC for the house to use it

    • 4

Connect the inverter to the house's electrical panel.
