How to Apply Sherwin-Williams E-Barrier

Sherwin-Williams E-Barrier is a specialty paint designed to help conserve energy. The product provides a coating that reflects radiant heat. This means heat from the sun is repelled during summer months and heat from your home heating system is trapped inside during the winter months. Typically applied to the underside of roof sheathing in attics or on top of previously coated commercial decking, applying E-Barrier is as simple as applying a coat of paint with a sprayer.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the area for painting. Setup will be minimal because you are working in an unfinished attic, but be sure to cover anything stored in the attic and make sure you have taped off any windows so they are not hit by overspray. Also, dust and remove any debris from the surface to which you will be applying the reflective coating.

    • 2

Open any windows to ventilate the area and be sure you are wearing a dust mask or ventilator and goggles. Wear other protective clothing as recommended for the particular sprayer you are using.

    • 3

Load paint into the sprayer. This varies depending on the brand of the sprayer, so check the manufacturer's instructions. Also adjust the spray tip to the proper setting for the paint. This again could vary depending on the sprayer you use.

    • 4

Turn on the sprayer and begin spraying the Sherwin-Williams E-Barrier. Start by cutting in any corners and then filling the area with overlapping strokes from top to bottom.

    • 5

Paint the entire ceiling and any unfinished walls using this method. If there are hard-to-reach areas, you can use a brush and roller to apply the E-Barrier.

    • 6

Clean the paint sprayer once you are finished applying the paint. The sooner you clean the sprayer, the easier this process will be. E-Barrier is a latex-based product so the sprayer can be cleaned with water, but be sure to check the manufacturer's recommendations for cleaning.

    • 7

Wait for the paint to dry before removing any tape or material covering windows. Remove any tarps covering items stored in the attic.
