How to Grease a Windmill

Wind turbines and wind machines have enjoyed a resurgence as of late due to rising power costs and an increased consciousness of green energy. Wind turbines are effective energy generators and can produce substantial amounts of power over the course of many years. As there are many moving elements involved in wind turbines, some minor maintenance is required to ensure the longevity and power output levels. Minor maintenance such as greasing will extend the life of your backyard turbine.

Things You'll Need

  • Grease gun (460 weight grease)
  • Ladder or scaffolding)

Instructions

    • 1

Wait for a break in the wind, or if available, apply the brake to stop the turbine's rotors from spinning. Using a ladder or temporary scaffolding, access the service hatch on top of the turbine nacelle.

    • 2

Remove the service cover on the nacelle. This is the cover to the rear of the rotor blades that houses the gear box and generator.

    • 3

      Locate the main shaft bearings.

    • 4

Apply grease to the servicing side of the bearings by pressing the grease gun's nozzle to the open side of the bearing. Fill it completely, ensuring the entire cavity in the bearing is full of grease.

    • 5

Apply grease to the yaw bearing if your turbine is equipped in the same fashion as above. The yaw bearing is the bearing that allows the turbine to turn on its axis into the wind.

    • 6

Apply grease in the same fashion to the pitch bearings if equipped.

    • 7

Check for any damage or debris inside the nacelle and clean as required.
