House Heating Once Per Day vs. Constant

There are many different ways to save money on your home heating costs, and one is to turn the heat on only once per day, as opposed to heating your home all day. Try this solution if you work every day, and are not home when the heat is off, or if you live in an area of the country that doesn't get very cold winters. Purchase a programmable thermostat so you can easily change the temperature of your home according to your schedule.
  1. Turning Off the Heat

    • Turning off the heat in your home will save you money, especially if you turn it off when you will be out all day or over a weekend. The longer the heat is off, the more money you save, because you are not paying to heat an unoccupied home. Be sure to program the heat to come back on at least an hour before you return home, so your house is warm when you want it to be. If the nights aren't too cold, you can also turn off your heat at night and simply use extra blankets on your bed to stay warm.

    Turning Down the Heat

    • If you live in a very cold area of the country, or will only be out for a short time, it may be best to simply turn down the heat when you are out or on vacation to prevent your water pipes from freezing. Select a temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit or even lower, which is at least 10 degrees cooler than normal room temperature. Again, program the heat to go back up an hour before you return home so your house is at a comfortable temperature.

    Doors and Windows

    • Try other tricks to save money on heating your home besides turning the heat down or off. Windows and doors are a major source of heat loss, and sealing them properly with caulking can make a big difference, particularly in homes with older doors and windows. Pay attention to window coverings, too. Heavy curtains can help insulate windows and keep cold air out, but if you have a window that the sun shines in, open the curtains so the sun can warm your home.

    Heating Parts of Your Home

    • If there are guest rooms in your home that are rarely used, shut off the heat to those rooms and shut the door. This will also save you money on heating costs because you won't be paying to heat a space that no one uses. When you have guests, turn on the heat and open the door before they arrive to make the room more comfortable.
