How to Install Foil Wrap Insulation

Between rising energy costs and concerns over environmental damage caused by using energy unnecessarily, many people try to find ways to reduce their energy use. One way you can do this is by adding or improving the insulation in your home. When deciding which type of insulation to use, one option is foil wrap insulation. This type of insulation resembles aluminum foil, and can be used in a wide variety of applications, including walls, attics, crawlspaces, ducts and pipes.

Instructions

  1. Walls and Other Flat Surfaces

    • 1

Unroll the insulation and place it flat against the bottom edge of the wall.

    • 2

Staple the insulation to the wall every 6 inches with a staple gun.

    • 3

Place the next sheet into position on the wall so that it overlaps the top edge of the first sheet by about an inch. Staple it to the wall.

    • 4

Continue installing the insulation until you reach the top of the wall. If you need to use more than one sheet per row, overlap the edges of the adjacent sheet by an inch.

    Pipes and Other Round Surfaces

    • 5

Measure the length and circumference of the surface you are insulating.

    • 6

Cut a sheet of insulation to fit your needs with a utility knife.

    • 7

Wrap the foil around the object you are insulating.

    • 8

Apply metallic foil tape over the seams of the insulation.
