How to Treat the Outside of a Cordwood Building

Cordwood cabins are cheaply constructed and easy to build. Their design affords better insulation than most cabin-building techniques. Split wood is laid in two mortar beds with insulation in between so only the ends of logs appear on the outside. While this building method has many advantages, treating the wood by soaking the logs before building or spraying the wood after construction protects it from termites, fungus, rot and other insects. The treatment substance is inexpensive to make at home.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out 4 cups of borax into a large bucket. The bucket must have the capacity to fit over a gallon at least.

    • 2

Pour 1 gallon of hot water into the bucket with the borax and mix together with a large spoon until both ingredients fully mix together.

    • 3

Dunk each log into the mixture during the building process just until completely coated, not forgetting any logs, as they will attract the rot and fungus and create a weak spot in the building.

    • 4

Spray the outside of the building with the mixture if it is already built. This may involve the purchase of spray equipment such as the sort used for spray painting, including a hose, gun and pump. Alternatively, one can use a large, exterior paintbrush to paint the outside of the building if spray equipment is not available. As with the previous step, make sure to coat the entire surface of every log with the treatment mixture.
