How to Replace a Service Wire to Electric Company Feed

The main electric wire that connects an electrical service panel to the utility usually runs only a short distance. This distance is often less then a few feet to the electrical meter. When an electrical service panel is replaced, these large wires must be replaced with new, longer wires if the service panel installation is farther from the meter than before. This process requires careful planning and coordination with the electric company.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the main service panel and set the main breaker to the "Off" or "Open" position.

    • 2

Test the wires with the multimeter to ensure there is no current.

    • 3

Locate the two mounting bolts holding the service wires in place. These are commonly found in the upper portion of the service panel near the main breaker.

    • 4

Loosen the mounting bolts holding the wires in place. In some cases these may be screws instead of bolts.

    • 5

Unbolt the wire connections in the electrical meter. This will require the aid of the utility company to open the meter. Opening a meter without authorization is against most utility's policies and is prevented with tamper evident seals.

    • 6

Remove the electrical wiring from the home by pulling it out through the wall.

    • 7

Connect the new wiring to the electrical meter.

    • 8

Run the new wiring into the home via the shortest route to the electrical service panel.

    • 9

Connect the new service wire to the electrical panel by reversing the removal process.

    • 10

Turn the main breaker to the "On" or "Closed" position.
