Electrician Certification

• According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), certification requirements for electricians vary from state to state. In states like California, certification is not required unless an electrician has employees who work under them. To become certified, applicants must pass an exam with a minimum score of 70 percent. The exam is multiple choice, and the general electrician examination is 100 questions in California. Topics covered on the exam include wiring and protection, wiring methods and materials, equipment and communication systems.

Plumbing Certification

• Like electricians, plumbers earn certification through their state, and all certified plumbers must have a strong understanding of state plumbing codes and safety standards. States require that certification applicants graduate from a plumbing program at a community college or technical school or complete a plumbing apprenticeship program. In addition to passing a certification examination, applicants must also demonstrate hands-on plumbing skills.

National Inspection Testing Certification

• The National Inspection Testing Certification (NITC) offers certification designations to plumbing, piping and HVAC professionals. In addition to certifications offered to prospective journeyman and master plumbers, applicants can also receive the plumber inspector designation. The NITC is a third-party certification party and designations meet all state and federal requirements. To earn this certification, applicants must pass a comprehensive examination.

Green-e

• Electricians around the country also have the option of becoming certified with Green-e, which is an organization that focuses on producing and installing renewable energy, which is an opportunity for electricians to learn how to produce electricity through alternative energy solutions. The Competitive Electricity Product Certification available through Green-e ensures that electricians understand and have the skills necessary to install and service renewable electricity products.
