How to Calculate Insulation Volume

A building's insulation slows the transfer of energy through its wall systems. The more insulation a building has the better it is at retaining its interior temperature. Adding more insulation to the attic space is the most effective method for reducing heating and cooling bills. When ordering the loose fill insulation, you need to understand the volume of material you need. This is the cubic feet of space you want to fill with insulation.

Instructions

    • 1

Break the attic space into individual rectangular sections. If your attic is one large space the job is much easier.

    • 2

Measure and record the length and width of each of the sections with a measuring tape.

    • 3

Determine the thickness of insulation, in inches, you want to blow into the space. This largely depends on your current volume, local climate and insulation type. Go to the Resource Section for links to assist in making that decision.

    • 4

Multiply the length, width and thickness for each area in the attic. Add all of the results together. The result is the total square feet of insulation you need to order for the attic space.
