New Construction Ideas for Electric

Electrical devices and electrical power usage in construction change rapidly with advancing technology. Forward thinking commercial and home builders should anticipate future electrical needs and uses when planning new construction projects. Energy conservation, efficiency and improvements to quality of life are among the reasons for incorporating new electrical ideas in construction projects.
  1. Wiring Systems

    • Wiring plans simplify installation.

Consider future needs when building or renovating a home or commercial structure.
Homes and commercial buildings can be greatly enhanced and made future-proof with a professional electrical plan. Each new construction project should be pre-wired for special electrical services. The wiring plan should include service for telephones, television, computers and security systems. A central control center should be considered. It should be located adjacent to the electrical service panel in the garage, basement or service area. The central control system should provide all systems and circuits with surge protection from external power spikes.

    Phone Systems

    • Phone system wiring should be provided to every room with a current or projected occupant. The service should be available at a wall plate with a pre-wired telephone connection clearly marked.

    Television and Computers

    • Co-axial television cable outlets should be available in every room to be occupied currently or in the future. Computer data cables should be installed for each occupancy. Although the trend in computer systems favors wireless connections, hard-wired connections should be provided, or at least offered as an option. The computer wiring system should include direct access to the Internet. Combination wall plates are available that provide outlets for telephone, cable television, satellite television and computer data ports.

    Security Systems

    • Alarms protect against smoke and fire.

Security is an issue worth serious consideration in new and renovated offices and homes. Sensors should be installed at every opening that will allow entry to a building. The sensors are wired to a central security point that is connected to internal or outside providers of security. The security system should also provide smoke and fire alarms throughout the building.

    Entertainment

    • Audio systems can be pre-wired options for piping sound throughout a building. Home entertainment systems provide movie theater sound with the installation of multiple speakers to enhance large screen viewing of TV programs or movies.

    Electric Metering

    • Public utility companies have begun offering digital electric meters to new buildings and renovations. The new meters are connected to a central utility station wirelessly to collect electrical usage data from each occupancy. This eliminates the cost and need for meter readers and reduces meter reading errors.
