How to Insulate the Outside Garage Walls When They're Drywalled

If an interior garage wall isn't finished when it's built, some homeowners install drywall over the exposed studs to give the walls a finished appearance and so they have a surface to hang items. If the walls aren't insulated before the drywall is installed, it can make the garage temperature uncomfortable. You can insulate the walls with blown insulation, which allows you to insulate the walls without removing the drywall.

Instructions

    • 1

Use a stud finder to locate the studs in the wall and mark their locations.

    • 2

Drill holes into the wall between the studs with a 3-inch hole saw. Place the holes near the ceiling, and save the pieces of drywall that you remove, if possible, so you can use them to patch the wall after the insulation has been applied.

    • 3

Slide the hose for the blower machine into the first hole, and lower it to the bottom of the cavity.

    • 4

Wrap a towel around the hose against the wall to prevent the insulation from blowing out of the wall.

    • 5

Fill the machine with the insulation, following the manufacturer's instructions for the machine you're operating.

    • 6

Turn the machine on, and slowly pull the hose up out of the cavity while holding the towel against the wall. Turn off the machine when you can no longer add insulation to the cavity.

    • 7

Fill the rest of the wall with the insulation.

    • 8

Place the circular pieces of drywall into the holes, then patch the holes with joint compound and drywall tape. Cover the patched area with primer, then paint the area to match the rest of the wall.
