How to Add R5 Insulated Sheathing

Insulated sheathing -- foam panels designed for use on interior basement walls -- come in a variety of R values. R values measure the capacity of an insulating material to resist heat flow; higher R values indicate greater insulating power. R5 is a good choice for much of the United States. If your home currently has an uninsulated basement, the addition of insulated sheathing to the walls can significantly improve energy efficiency and save you money. If you are a handy do-it-yourselfer, you can add R5 insulated sheathing.

Instructions

    • 1

Starting at one corner of the wall, measure the height of the wall and the distance to any obstructions or openings on the wall. Transfer those measurements to your first panel if necessary. Cut away any excess panel by drawing a utility knife along a straight edge at the appropriate points. Snap off any excess panel after you've scored it with the knife.

    • 2

Apply construction adhesive onto the back of the panel with a caulk gun. Place the panel in position, and press firmly on it until the adhesive sets enough that it doesn't move.

    • 3

Measure the space where the next panel goes, and trim the panel as necessary. Apply it to the wall with construction adhesive. Continue measuring and applying panels until the wall is covered.

    • 4

Place strips of vinyl tape onto the seams between panels to ensure an airtight fit.
