Instructions

    • 1

Measure the opening of your window. Take the measurements on the outside of the frame. Add approximately 1 inch to each measurement to allow space for the mortar you will need to secure the Guardwise basement window.

    • 2

Remove the window sash by pressing down on the outer track of the sash with one hand. Pull in on the top section of the window sash with the other hand. Once one half of the sash lifts from the window, remove the second half.

    • 3

Unscrew any screws securing the window frame to the walls, using a drill. Apply pressure to the top and bottom of the frame to push the frame toward the center of the window opening. Slide the frame free. Tap the frame with a hammer or mallet if necessary to loosen the frame or cut it into sections with a handsaw and remove it. Discard the frame.

    • 4

Remove any old mortar that secured the old frame, using a cold chisel. Position two wedges on either bottom side of the opening. Fit the Guardwise window so it rests on top of the wedges.

    • 5

Prepare mortar according to the manufacturer’s instructions in a bucket. Scoop out the mortar with a masonry trowel and apply it to the seams around the Guardwise window. Apply enough mortar to fully fill in the seams. Wipe away any excess mortar with a clean rag or towel. Allow the mortar to dry, based on the manufacturer’s instructions.
