How to Lay Infloor Heat Insulation

Infloor heating systems generate warmth through electrical cables or hot water piping underneath the floor. These systems heat not only the floor, but also the room because the air near the floor is heated and rises upward. You can improve the performance of these floors by installing a foil insulation barrier underneath them. This prevents heat from radiating downward and reflects it up, providing extra heat for the room.

Things You'll Need

  • Foil insulation
  • Utility knife
  • 2-inch foil tape

Instructions

    • 1

Unroll a strip of foil insulation onto the subfloor along one wall with the foil facing up. Cut the foil with a utility knife to fit.

    • 2

Lay another strip of insulation onto the subfloor, placing the edges of the two strips together.

    • 3

Tape the edges of the insulation strips together with 2-inch foil tape. Place the tape flat against the foil to prevent gaps or leaks in the insulation.

    • 4

Continue laying the foil onto the floor in this fashion until the entire floor is covered. You are now ready to install the heating system and the finish floor.
