DIY Carport & Patio Cover

A sturdy canvas cover for the carport and patio can be made from a sheet of heavy-duty canvas which can be found at hardware stores and fabric shops. This cover will keep the rain and snow off the family car and shade the patio during bright sunny afternoons. Minimal expense and effort is involved in making the cover which requires no sewing and will function well in almost any location after just a few hours of concentrated time.

Instructions

    • 1

Make grommet holes in each corner of the canvas with the grommet maker, 2 inches from each fabric edge.

    • 2

Hammer a nail through one end of an 8-foot pole, 2 inches from the end, that will serve as a dowel. Repeat for the second pole.

    • 3

Measure 8 feet from the house for the carport or patio cover. Dig 1-foot holes 8 feet apart in the ground with the shovel. Insert the 8-foot poles in the hole and pack the dirt around the poles tightly.

    • 4

Screw the eye hooks into the house at the appropriate spots, 8 feet apart. Attach the canvas to the house by hooking the grommets over the eye hooks.

    • 5

Insert the opposite edge eye hooks in the tops of the wooden poles. Attach two tent poles with a length of rope tied to the top of a wooden pole. Pound the tent poles in the ground to stabilize the wooden pole. Repeat with second pole.
