How Long to Wait Before Staining New Concrete?

Concrete is an impressionable substance that can be tricky to work with without permanently damaging it. During the pivotal hours after laying new concrete, it is important to not disturb the smoothed-out concrete at all.
  1. Warm Weather Waiting

    • In climates that are warmer than average, wait at least 15 days before trying to stain new concrete. In warmer climates, concrete is able to dry faster because humidity is evaporated at a faster rate out of the concrete. It is safe to walk on it after about 10 days and is ready for painting at 15-20 days after laying.

    Cooler Climates

    • In any climate that is, on average, cooler than 65 degrees Fahrenheit, you should wait at least 20-30 days after laying the concrete before attempting to stain it, depending on the season.

    If using an Acid-Based Stain

    • When using acid-based stains that have a greater ability to damage the concrete, you should wait at least 20 days, no matter what the temperature is. Because the acid can more easily expose and eat away at cracks in the concrete, you have the be much more careful when applying it. If you are in a cooler temperature, still give the concrete 20 days at least. If your environment is very cold, wait another 10 before using acid-based stains.

    The Longer the Better

    • The longer you wait for the concrete to solidify and cure, the sturdier it will be when the time comes to stain it. Even if you are in a very hot climate, waiting 30 days or more is better if you aren't in a hurry.
