Information on Flex Paving Asphalt

Flex paving asphalt (Perma-Flex) is a registered trademark for an asphalt paving system used to make repairs on large areas of roads or parking lots when cracking or general damage has taken place. The mix of bonding agents is poured onto an existing asphalt surface before turning hard. It was developed in the 1970s and is now used across the country by companies licensed to use the process.
  1. Suitability

    • Flex paving asphalt is not suitable for all surfaces so a specialist needs to check the surface to see if the process is suitable. If damage is too great, contractors won't overlay the surface.

    Repair Process

    • For small areas where the asphalt has deteriorated badly, the overlay must be removed and replaced with a hot asphalt mix. If the surface is unstable, additional stone needs to be inserted under the replacement asphalt. However, the quantity of this is unknown until all old deteriorated asphalt is removed.

    Overlay

    • Once the flex paving asphalt process is complete, it's sprayed with a tack coat. An asphalt paver rolls over the surface to compact it down.

    Concerns

    • As it's an overlay process, any drains, metal grates or manholes need to be elevated to accommodate for the increased height of the surface.
