Do It Yourself Driveway Installation

A driveway provides more than just access to a home and its inhabitants, it makes a big statement in the overall design and curb appeal of a home because it's one of the largest visual elements. Gravel driveways make it easy to color coordinate the various stones with the colors on the home and in the surrounding landscape. Gravel driveways are a do-it-yourself project that can often be completed in one or two weekends.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Remove any surface material to a depth of 6 to 10 inches.

    • 2

Tamp the surface with a compactor or a tamper to make sure the ground is tightly compacted.

    • 3

Lay down plastic sheeting to prevent grass and weeds from growing up through the gravel.

    • 4

Rake in the first load of gravel to a depth of 2 to 4 inches, using No. 3 gravel, which is a large size gravel rock. Rake the gravel in place so the midpoint of the driveway is slightly higher than the sides so water can easily run off of the driveway.

    • 5

Place another 2- to 4-inch layer of No. 57 size gravel, which is slightly smaller than No. 3 gravel and rake it into place. Check the midpoint of the driveway to keep the crown intact for drainage.

    • 6

Finish the driveway with a 2- to 4-inch layer of number 21-A gravel which is very fine. Rake it into place, checking the crown for drainage.
