Carport Options

If your home doesn't have a garage, you can still keep your car, truck or motorcycle protected from the elements with a carport. A carport provides a sturdy roof to shade your vehicle from the sun in the summer and shield it from rain and snow in the winter. There are two types and a good variety of materials to choose from. Your carport doesn't have to be boring or unattractive and can serve as more than protection for your car.
  1. Types

    • There are two types of carports: attached and free-standing. An attached carport is an extension of the home's roof line, with poles holding up the roof. The carport can have no sides at all or have one, two or three sides to help shield cars from the weather. If you want to attach a carport to an existing home, consider hiring a professional builder. Free-standing carports are separate from the home and can be erected wherever you choose. Free-standing carports are ideal for do-it-yourselfers, and most are easy to construct. Purchase a complete free-standing carport kit or buy the materials separately for a more custom design.

    Materials

    • Wood and metal are the most common materials used to build a carport. Most attached carports have wood poles and roofs made of the same type of roofing material as the home. Attached carports match the design and exterior of the home. Free-standing carports usually have metal poles to hold up the roof, which can be made of metal or wood. Instead of a hard roof, some free-standing carports have a canopy made of sturdy cloth. Tops can be rounded, flat or peaked.

    Considerations

    • Choose the type of carport that suits your home's design and decor. Choose an attractive style and material if the carport is in front of your home or visible from the road. If the carport is not visible to passers-by, you have more flexibility in style and design, especially if you are going to be using the carport for storage. Make sure the carport you choose adheres to city building codes and regulations and the rules of your homeowners association.

    Other Uses

    • A carport can be put to a number of uses in addition to shielding vehicles. Lawnmowers, garden tools and other equipment can be stored under a carport. If you have a motor home, create a custom carport to store your home-away-from-home when you are not traveling. Use a portable, or free-standing, carport as a tent during a special event or gathering at your home, such as a party or wedding. Use a carport canopy as a shady place for pets and animals to rest.
