Aggregate is the gravel that holds concrete together in a sidewalk or a driveway. In many driveways, the surface is smoothed out and finished so the aggregate is pushed down from the surface deep into the concrete. To create a more interesting look, some concrete layers spread a further portion of gravel onto the surface to create what is known as exposed aggregate. Exposed aggregate is a cheap way to achieve an interesting effect on the driveway.
