How to Keep Sensitive Items Cool in a Garage

From spare batteries to paint, from oils to electronics, from chemicals to car parts -- so many heat-sensitive materials can end up gathering dust in the garage. But we often forget that many of these items can be damaged and even turn potentially dangerous if they get too hot. You don't have to install an expensive ventilation system to keep these materials cool. With a few tweaks to the way you store your things, you can reduce a lot of the heat in your garage.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a spot out of the sun for storage. If your garage has windows, look for places that the sun doesn't hit at all during the day.

    • 2

Submerge any waterproof items in water. This will eliminate the chance of the items being damaged by heat.

    • 3

Use a cooler padded with sand for non-waterproof items. You can keep the sand in re-sealable plastic storage bags to prevent corrosion. The sand will insulate against the heat.

    • 4

Use an army ammunition box for all other items. The metal casing is designed to keep heat out of live ammunition, so should protect most of your stored material.

    • 5

Increase the ventilation in your garage. Open a window if you have one, or buy a small, portable fan and turn it on for an hour every day.
