Install the sub-base for your asphalt. Pour at least 8 inches of sand over clay soils or 4 inches in low-moisture sandy soils. Make sure you spread the soil evenly and compact it with the 3-ton roller. Tamp the edges of the soil with the hand tamper. Slam the tamper down with pressure to make a 45-degree angle at each end of the soil.
Add 1 inch of sand over the middle of the sub-base in a 2-foot wide band. Run over the newly added sand with the roller to compact it. Use the level to ensure that the sub-base is angled to the sides. If the sub-base is not angled enough, keep adding more sand until it is angled. This will ensure the water runs off the asphalt product.
Pour 4 inches of uncompacted asphalt over the sand sub-base. Compact the asphalt by running it over with the roller. Make sure the finished asphalt is at least 3 inches deep compacted. If the finish asphalt is not at least three inches, add more asphalt until you reach a depth of three inches.
Compact the edges of the asphalt with the hand tamper. Press down hard with the hand tamper to create a 45-degree finish angle on all the edges. Let the asphalt dry for at least 72 hours before allowing vehicular traffic over it.
Pour the asphalt sealer on the driveway. Follow the sealer directions for the proper amount of sealer per square foot as it can vary by manufacturer of the sealer. Spread the sealer, around with the rubber squeegee. Let the sealer dry for at least 48 hours. This will prevent the phenomenon of "tracking" residue common with recycled asphalt.
