What Is Asphalt Mastic?

Contractors build roadways, driveways and other paved services using asphalt. Sometimes, cracks, dips and other problems form in the asphalt. Instead of redoing the entire job, the contractor uses a type of material called asphalt mastic. Roofers who repair roofs where the coal tar pitch membrane has been damaged also apply asphalt mastic.
  1. Definition

    • Asphalt mastic consists of a graded mineral with asphaltic cement and plasticizing agents. This produces a substance that is fluid when heated so that the asphalt mastic can be applied. When the asphalt mastic reaches a normal temperature, it solidifies into a strong mass. Other materials found in asphalt mastic include limestone, pigments and binders. Certain asphalt mastic can be applied to either wet or dry surfaces.

    Properties

    • Asphalt mastic has certain characteristics that make it a suitable material in roadway and roof repair. Contractors and roofers find it ideal since asphalt mastic has a resistance to water as well as condensation from water vapor. Another characteristic of asphalt mastic is its fire resistance and virtual incombustible properties. Asphalt mastic also does not rot or become damaged by vermin.

    Benefits

    • Contractors and roofers use asphalt mastic for its many benefits. Because of its fibrous quality, asphalt mastic provides a durable and long-lasting surface during application. Asphalt mastic can also be used for emergency repairs in all types of weather, since it will join with wet surfaces. Asphalt mastic is asbestos free, making it safe for contractors and roofers.

    Application

    • Contractors and roofers find the application of asphalt mastic a simple process. The area to be repaired must be cleaned of all foreign materials, such as dirt and gravel. The contractor or roofer uses a trowel to place a mound of asphalt mastic to the repair surface. By sweeping the trowel in a back and forth motion, the contractor or roofer smooths the asphalt mastic into an even layer and allows it to fully adhere.
