How to Roll an Asphalt Mat

Asphalt must be compacted to up to 96 percent in order to provide a durable, smooth mat for vehicle traffic. Compacting the asphalt mat is known as "rolling," no matter if it is done with a double drum roller or another type of compactor. While some homeowners rent rollers to finish their private roads or driveways, most simply use a plate compactor due to their availability and cost-effectiveness. Many equipment rental stores offer plate compactors for rent.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the compactor's tank with gasoline, and the water tank with plain water. This water can come from a garden hose or other unpurified source. Move the compactor into position behind the area where you will begin paving.

    • 2

Shovel several square feet of asphalt into the area to be paved.

    • 3

With the throttle set on low, pull the cord on the plate compactor to start the engine. Slowly open the throttle on the compactor. Place your hands on the handle, and gently guide the compactor forward over the area of asphalt.

    • 4

Have someone shovel asphalt a few square feet at a time in front of the compactor. Continue until the entire area is paved and compacted.
