Run a stiff bristled broom across the surface of the driveway to remove large debris. Wet the driveway with a connected garden hose. Spray asphalt cleaner on all oil and gas stains. Scrub the areas thoroughly with a scrub brush. Allow the areas to sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Spray water on the driveway to remove all signs of the asphalt cleaner.
Remove loose asphalt from all cracks and potholes by setting the tip of a cold chisel behind the material and hitting the top of the chisel with a 2-pound sledgehammer.
Fill cracks smaller than 1/2 inch with an asphalt crack filler.
Pour asphalt cold patching compound into all large cracks and potholes. Smooth the material with a hand trowel. Ensure the top of the cold patching compound sits 3/4 to 1 inch above the surface of the driveway. Slam a tamper on each large repair to compact the material and even it to the top of the driveway. Allow the repairs to dry for 4 to 6 hours.
Wet the driveway with the garden hose. Pour asphalt sealer onto the dampened driveway. Pull a squeegee across the sealer to spread it along the asphalt surface. Continue pouring and spreading the sealer until you have covered the entire surface of the driveway. Allow the sealer to dry for 24 hours.
Repeat the process of pouring and spreading the sealer until you have a second uniform coat of protection on the surface of the driveway.
