How to Seal Freshly-Poured Concrete

Concrete is a cement-based construction material that hardens after being mixed with water. The concrete then becomes a strong, stone-like substance appropriate for use as pavement, building foundations, walls and other structures. Sealing fresh concrete is important for protecting the material from weather, staining, water and sun damage and extreme temperatures. Applying concrete sealant is as simple as painting a wall and is a "do-it-yourself" project accessible to most anyone.

  • 1 stiff-bristled brush
  • Concrete sealant
  • 1 paint roller with extension brush

Instructions

    • 1

Check the concrete to ensure that the surface is clean. If not, you may need to apply concrete cleaner to the affected area and scrub away the dirt.

    • 2

Put on your goggles, gloves and face mask and turn on the fan so that it is blowing directly at you. Make your work area as open as possible for maximum ventilation.

    • 3

Test the sealant in a concealed area to make sure it won't damage or alter the coloring of your concrete.

    • 4

Soak the paint roller in sealant and evenly apply it to the concrete. Cover the entire area with sealant. Use a normal paint brush to cover the edges and corners.

    • 5

Work the sealant into the concrete while avoiding any puddling of the product. One coat of sealant is typically sufficient.

    • 6

Let the concrete dry for several hours, or as directed by the manufacturer.
