How to Maintain a Turf-Block Driveway

Turf block, or stone, is porous pavement, used for environmental and aesthetic reasons where the strength of paving is needed but it's desirable to reduce impervious surfaces and retain green space. The grass in turf stones has the same maintenance requirements as other lawns, but the permeability of turf stones is reduced when sediment is allowed to build up. Treat the grass the same as any grass, but be vigilant about removing debris and sediment from the voids in the pavers.

Instructions

    • 1

Maintain a regular watering, mowing and fertilizer schedule similar to any lawn on the rest of the property and appropriate to the grass type. Do not aerate.

    • 2

Stay off the driveway for a few days when grass shows tracks from repetitive use. The grass will recover. Reseed bare areas periodically as required.

    • 3

Clean the voids of dirt and debris with a vacuum sweeper three to four times a year. Monitor monthly for sediment buildup and other impediments to drainage.

    • 4

Lift blades on the snowplow to avoid damaging grass, or fix rubber to the plow blades. Use plastic shovels for clearing snow manually.

    • 5

Inspect the surface for deteriorating or broken pavers and repair or replace as necessary. Fix any potholes. Don't use sealers or impervious paving materials for repairs.
