Determine your budget. Know how much stone you will need for your driveway so you can figure out how much each type of stone will run you. Your stone needs to be four to 6 inches thick for a driveway.
Research what type of stone is readily available in your area. If you choose a stone that is hard to come by, you are going to pay a lot more than picking a stone that is common to your area.
Consider the look of your house and current landscaping. You want your driveway to compliment your home. If you have stone on your house, consider using that same type of stone, or stone in a similar color on the driveway for a uniform look.
Use crushed, gray rock, lava rock or gravel to pave your driveway. It packs down well and won't end up all over your yard.
Consult with a professional. Get their opinion on what type of stone would work best given your land conditions, overall home style and size of your driveway.
