How to Remove a Concrete Driveway

The majority of homes built today are built with a concrete driveway, and while concrete is a generally durable material that is able to withstand weather and abuse, the prolonged effect of heavy traffic can take its toll. If the driveway has deteriorated beyond repair, or you simply want to redesign it using different materials, demolishing and disposing of the concrete driveway is a usually easy task with the use of simple construction tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Jackhammer
  • Sledge hammer
  • Angle grinder with abrasive blade

Instructions

    • 1

Put on safety gear (work gloves, safety glasses, ear plugs) before starting any work.

    • 2

Firmly hold the jackhammer with the chisel resting on the concrete driveway.

    • 3

Turn on the jackhammer (usually trigger activated on the jackhammer handle) to begin breaking apart the concrete. To avoid getting the jackhammer stuck in the concrete, change the angle at which you are holding the jackhammer. Work your way through the driveway, starting on any edge or corner.

    • 4

Break apart any large chunks of concrete using the sledge hammer, as the jackhammer may only break the concrete into large chunks.

    • 5

Cut the rebar that is holding the concrete chunks together using the angle grinder. Rebar is run through concrete driveways for structural support, and may make disposal difficult if it is not cut.

    • 6

Move the concrete chunks to an area that is out of the way, but still accessible for transport (dumpster, truck).

    • 7

Call a local waste disposal service to schedule a pickup. If you are going to dispose of the concrete yourself, you can call a local refuse center for concrete disposal instructions. It may prove easiest to load the concrete into a dumpster and have a scheduled pickup.
