Do it Yourself: Install Veneer Over an Existing Metal Garage Door

Wood Veneer

• Wood veneer can be installed on metal garage doors quite easily, as these pieces of bead board wood veneer lie pretty flat against the metal garage door fronts. Choose what type of wood veneer you would like to use on your garage door and have it cut to manageable sections for installation. It makes the most sense to have the veneer cut in two to three different sections that match up seamlessly along their edges. This bead board veneer can then be attached to the metal garage surface with a glue that adheres to both the bead board and the metal surface of the original garage doors. If you can't find a glue that works, sheet metal screws will work to affix the veneer to the garage doors, though it will be visible to anyone observing the veneer from the outside.

Stone Veneer

• Stone veneer is made from artificial pieces of stone and is cheaper and more efficient to use than real stone, especially when installing it on the front of metal garage doors. This stone veneer is similar to concrete in its makeup, but is still reasonably lightweight and durable. Have your stone veneer poured to the dimensions of your garage door and break it up into sections if that is the easier way to install it. Make sure no part of the veneer will rub or scrape against the top frame of the garage itself, because this will permanently damage the stone veneer over time. Attach this veneer with masonry and sheet metal screws along the edges, or use metal brackets that wrap around the edges of the garage to hold the stone veneer in place.

Clay Brick Veneer

• Like stone veneer, clay brick veneer can also be created to look like a brick wall on the front of your metal garage. This can be built out of artificial stone that has similar properties to concrete but is still lightweight and durable. You can attach it to a metal garage door in the same way as stone veneer, though the clay brick is a bit heavier and can actually put a large amount of stress on the supports and hinges of the garage door itself. Check with your garage door manufacturer or consider replacing your garage door hinges if you are going to install this clay brick veneer, because it may wear your garage door down over time after its installation.
